March meeting re-cap

We had a very nice gathering for our March meeting, which featured the amazing carvings that Barry Parekh creates.

We had a few show-and-tell items,

and then on to Barry's discussion of his humble beginnings.

We're currently without a blog-writer, which is why this blog has gone somewhat dormant during the last year or so, but we had some requests to share these pictures of Barry's work, so Lupe kindly photographed this meeting.

These pictures will have to suffice, but know that this meeting was captivating and thoroughly entertaining, and we're all in Barry's fan club now!

(Mike - you missed a good one!)

Interested in Carving?

Interested in carving?.....

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, meet on the third Wednesday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more.
This month’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00, and features the amazing bird carvings of Barry Parekh. Living near Havre de Grace, Maryland which is considered the decoy capital, Barry met many well-known carvers and got interested in decoy carving and painting in 1980. His work has won blue ribbons in the advanced level at both local and national carving competitions.
In addition to decorative duck and bird carving and photography, Barry practices medicine at the VA. He also donates much of his energy to teaching and carving with the Las Vegas Woodcarvers here in town, a group which meets several times a month at various sites around town. Join us as Barry discusses some of his amazing creations, and discusses both techniques, tools, and sculptural composition.
Have something to share with the group? We’ll have a quick “Show and Tell” before our featured presentation, so if you’ve made something awesome (or not so awesome, and you want some advice!) - bring your work to this meeting.
March is the first month of our annual dues drive, and like every year - this is completely voluntary. We’ll never twist your arm for the $20 it takes to call yourself a bona fide Sin City Woodworker, but it sure helps us defray the costs of running this group year round. And the best part - any monies left over go right back into the pockets of our members, so please consider joining us this year. We’ll be collecting dues for the next few months, so if you don’t make it to this one, you still have time.
Feel free to bring a project to present at Show and Tell, and as always - you’re welcome to bring a friend! This meeting will be held at Studio: Wood It Is!, 2267 West Gowan, unit 106 in North Las Vegas. As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, but remember - there are a limited number of chairs in the woodshop. Attendees might want to bring a folding chair if they wish to sit during the meeting. If you have questions or need directions, call the studio at 702-631-1870.

Happy 9th Anniversary, and ... oh, don't miss our next meeting!

Sin City Woodworkers

Follow the trail of sawdust to our next meeting...

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, meet on the third Wednesday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 21 at 7:00 and we have a special treat in store!
But… before I tell you about that…
Happy anniversary to all us… we’re celebrating our ninth year anniversary this month, and that’s something to cheer! People doubted that it could be done. That we couldn’t sustain a woodworking community here for that long. We have proven that we have a solid group, with a great diversity of talent. So - congratulations to all of us, whether you’re a new member, or one of our founders. Be proud of that!
This month - we have something special planned… two words - FIELD TRIP!
If you’ve been jonesin’ about the current “live edge” movement, this month’s meeting will likely wet your whistle!  Join us for an evening with Andrew and Nic Moore of Reclaimed Secrets on Wednesday, February 21 at 7:00 for a tour of their newly expanded store, lumberyard, and studio space.

If you're using Google Maps, the full address is:

2912 South Highland Drive
Unit G
Las Vegas, NV 89109
Reclaimed Secrets is a full scale furniture design company, lumberyard, and much more. Andrew sustainably harvests a variety of woods, including his infamous Beetle Kill Pine and Alligator Juniper, as well as some new species - including new hardwood additions walnut, pecan and more.

Located in the heart of the city, just a few doors down from Tool Service (a local tool repair shop that many of you have probably visited), Andrew’s been tearing up the local scene lately with his voluminous output of live edge tables. Some of his recent commissions have included the City of Las Vegas, many local restaurants and bars, and a great number of residential interiors. Andrew and his wife Nic were in the top running for Martha Stewart's Handmade in America 3 years in a row, and frankly - they build more in a month than most of us build in a year!

We won’t be having a Show and Tell at this meeting, so save some of your latest pieces for next month’s meeting. By the way, next month, we will be starting up our annual Dues Drive, where we ask you to become a bona fide member for the ridiculously cheap rate of $20 for the year! While dues are completely voluntary, your donation goes a long way to make our life easier - from funding our various operation expenses to supporting local woodworkers via our yearly building contests. And the best thing? Any leftover funds are given back to our members at the end of the year, at our annual Christmas party. What have you got to lose?… please consider becoming a dues paying member next month!
As always, the public is welcome to attend this meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. But remember that there is limited seating in Andrew’s woodshop.  Attendees might want to bring a folding chair if they wish to sit during the meeting. If you have questions or need directions, call the studio at 702-631-1870.
See you there!

We're back in the woodshop...

Happy New Year to all of us!

Hope your holidays were awesome, and that you’re back in the shop, making some amazing pieces. It’s time for another year of great woodworking presentations - so here goes…

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, meet on the third Wednesday of each month to share everything from techniques and project ideas to information about local suppliers and much more. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17 at 7:00, and we’re in for a treat - longtime luthier George Millward will be sharing his guitar building talent with a discussion of his 47 year career of guitar building.

George started off as an apprentice cabinetmaker in Chicago, and worked with some of the best. When he the opportunity, he also apprenticed with a luthier, learning the long lost skill of building guitars entirely by hand. Most guitars you’ll see are mass produced, but George’s guitars, which have sold on http://reverb.com , are built with classical methods of construction and joinery, built completely (for the most part) with hand tools.

He’ll bring a completed top and neck, and discuss some of the finer points of hand tool work that goes into making these instruments. George hopes to connect with other woodworkers interested in learning to build guitars, with the possibility of teaching a class in it. If you’ve wondered what’s involved, been interested in building your own, or just have some questions about instrument building - this is the meeting for you!

As usual, this meeting will be held at Studio: Wood It Is!, 2267 West Gowan, unit 106 in North Las Vegas. Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. But remember that there are a limited number of chairs in the woodshop. Attendees might want to bring a folding chair if they wish to sit during the meeting. If you have questions or need directions, call the studio at 702-631-1870.
