Interested in adding a CNC to your tool arsenal? Come to our June meeting!

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, will now be meeting on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 19, at 7:00, and if you’re looking to learn more about CNCs, or hoping to be a part of a CNC community here in Vegas, this meeting is right up your alley! We’re thrilled to have Chris Daly as our speaker; he’s passionate about CNCs, and  is a go-to resource for all of your CNC questions. Chris hopes to start a CNC group, similar to our Sin City Woodworking group here in town. So if you’re looking to be involved with like-minded CNC enthusiasts, this meeting is for you.

BTW - CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, which refers to the computerized operation of a tool - in this case, specifically a router. These machines can cut, carve, drill and shape wood in ways that the average woodworker cannot. And - the results are dead-on perfect, and easily duplicated. Most people think this tool is for large makers, mass-producing furniture or accessories. But Chris will discuss how the home-shop can benefit with the addition of a CNC in their tool arsenal.

Chris grew up and earned two degrees in North Carolina - one in Industrial Systems, and the other in CNC Machining. Listening to him for just a few minutes and you’ll realize he’s probably the most knowledgeable CNC woodworker in town. (Not an exaggeration!)

Chris will discuss a variety of subjects - including some basics like entry level machines, spindles VS, routers, how to get to the next level, and will pose this question - what’s holding you back?

A lot of woodworkers buy CNCs and get frustrated, often not being able to fully utilize the strengths and features of their machines. We hope this discussion will de-mystify this amazing tool.

This meeting will be held at Woodcraft of Las Vegas at 5220 W. Charleston Blvd.  As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.

Sin City Woodworkers May meeting - featuring the work of Dennis Patchett

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions. We meet on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas, member’s work, demos and much, much more.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 15 at 7:00 when emeritus member - Dennis Patchett - will be sharing his technique for making intricately carved boxes.

These boxes - mostly made with Mahogany (but occasionally Walnut, which ridiculously harder) - feature dovetailed joinery and custom feet. (Dennis will also speak about the feet that he crafts for each box.) But the most amazing aspect of these boxes is the meticulous carvings on every box he makes.

I’ve said it before - mostly because he prefers to stay out of the limelight - but Dennis is one of the best woodworkers in this town. Period. His carvings alone show skill that most of us will never achieve. When he adds these carved details to the furniture he builds,  he’s creating heirloom pieces that will be cherished for generations. Most days, you’ll find him carving away in his shop, enjoying his process in solitude.

He makes these boxes as gifts, and has never sold a single one. Each takes about six weeks to make, with Dennis working about 3-4 hours a day on each one. The detail and perfection in these boxes are something to be seen in person!

One last note - we recently lost one of our charter members - Jim Chadbourne - and I recently wrote a post about his passing. You can read about it here: https://sincitywoodworkers.blogspot.com/2025/04/a-loss-in-our-woodworking-world-jim.html

We will miss him immensely, and send much love to MaryJane and the rest of his family.

This meeting will be held at Woodcraft of Las Vegas at 5220 W. Charleston Blvd.  As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.

A loss in our woodworking world - Jim Chadbourne's passing

 This one hurts.

A lot.

We lost Jim Chadbourne this week; many of our Sin City Woodworking members know him as our resident electrical expert - a retired electrician from New York.

Jim had been fighting a few health issues for the past few years, and lately, we'd missed him at our monthly meetings. Saying he was an integral part of the woodworking community here is a huge understatement.

But beyond that, he was a friend. A good one, and we're heartbroken about his passing.

In 2009, when I contemplated starting the woodworking group - Sin City Woodworkers, I put a notice in our local newspaper. And pinned some ads on various bulletin boards around town. I planned a meeting at the library, expecting maybe 15 or 20 people.  Imagine my surprise when 70+ people attended!

Jim was one of our original members, and as we got to know him over the last 16 years, we realized woodworking was just one of his talents. He was - without a doubt - a family man first. You couldn't have a chat with him without him mentioning his amazingly talented wife - Mary Jane.

He always downplayed his skills, preferring to brag about MJ and whatever she was creating. They collaborated on many pieces - with Jim doing his woodworking magic, and MJ completing the various pieces that he'd made. He was just that kind of guy - humble, preferring to stay in the background, giving other people the credit and glory.

The good thing is - MJ never lets anyone forget Jim's contribution to their lives. Whether it was building furniture, working around the house, or even creating a wonderful studio for MJ - their collaboration was epic. She was - and IS - his Number One Fan.

But let's get real - Jim couldn't have been more proud of his daughters - Marisa and Danielle. There virtually wasn't a conversation I had with him that he didn't bring them up, telling me the latest accomplishment or funny story about his grandkids.

We're going to miss his wonderful wit, his eagerness to help with anything - from answering electrical questions to rolling up his sleeves and helping someone in need. I would bet he's helped dozens of people (woodworkers!) here with electrical issues.

Here is my favorite memory about Jim...

He was in THE VERY FIRST class that I ever taught at my school.

I opened the doors at the school on June 1, 2009 and Jim was the first student I welcomed to my shop.  I never forgot that.  A few years later, I had a small electrical job that needed to be done at the school, and Jim stopped by my shop - did the task, and slipped out the door without any fanfare or payment.

That's just who he was - generous, low key and willing to help anyone who needed it.

We're going to miss him immensely. They say time heals all wounds, but I don't think that's really true. I think we just learn to live with the scars.

We're sending much love and healing thoughts to Jim's family.

Field Trip! Here's our cross-over meeting with the Las Vegas Knife Makers

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions. We meet on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas, demos and information about local suppliers and much, much more.

Two words about our next meeting -

FIELD TRIP!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 17, at 7:00 and we’re heading out to visit Tony Immordino’s knife making studio.

If you attended our April 2024 meeting that featured fellow knife maker Len Black, you’ll remember that it was one of our best meetings ever. Tony accompanied Len and their discussion of knives, and steel and Damascus techniques was beyond interesting.

Tony has been making edged weapons for over six years, and works with the local knife maker community as a focal point for support and classes. He manages the Las Vegas knife Maker Facebook group since its creation three years ago.

As a graduate of the Bill Moran School of Bladesmithing in 2022, Tony has mentored master smiths in North America, and his skills are formidable. He also has a passion for traveling and demonstrating - teaching the next generation of knife makers.

He is part of the Art Knife Invitational (AKI) every October followed by the Las Vegas Hammer In convention at his shop. Tony will  have tons of show and tell items, and will host a general discussion on knife making, Seriously, this is going to be an outstanding evening for us!

This is just a thought - but I know many of us have special small pieces of wood that we’ve squirreled away for some future project - things that we never seem to get around to making. (Think of burls, or curly woods, or something figured and gorgeous!) If you have a small piece of wood that would make a gorgeous knife handle - please consider bringing it with you and donating it to the knife making group. It would be great to share some of our scraps with these artisans.

The meeting will be at 4265 W. Torino Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89139

You won’t want to miss this one!

Learn the secrets of matching colors when staining woods!

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, will now be meeting on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, at 7:00 where yours truly (me!) will be discussing how to match an existing finish with spray toner stains. I know, it sounds boring, but once you see how easy they are to use, you’ll be convinced they’re a game changer in your finishing toolbox.

I work with a lot of property managers who bring me damaged kitchen cabinet doors or drawer fronts that need replacing. It’s pretty easy to make a door that closely matches design-wise, but matching the stain color is a completely different challenge! Finish colors fade with age, years of cleaning or abuse, and matching that color is quite difficult.

Many years ago, a cabinetmaker friend told me about spray stains that can color wood appropriately. By layering colors together, it’s somewhat easy to recreate aged finishes that will closely match the existing wood - whether it’s kitchen cabinets or  a piece of free standing furniture.

This meeting will be held at Woodcraft of Las Vegas at 5220 W. Charleston Blvd.  As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.

Our February meeting features glass artist - Cory Knauss

Sin City Woodworkers is a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions. We meet on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas, demos and information about local suppliers and much, much more.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 20, at 7:00 and we’ll be featuring the multi talented Cory Knauss, who started out as a stained glass artist, but added woodworking to his bag of tricks about seven years ago. Much of Cory’s woodworking involves framing the stained glass panels that he’s made over the years.

Originally from Washington, Cory was a math teacher for over 20 years, and later - became a CPA.  He says he’s been retired for 9 years, but - do artists ever really retire?  Cory learned how to make stained glass  panels 45 years ago from his sister-in-law, and made several projects back then. Since he retired, he decided to take up the hobby again.

Cory will give an abbreviated demonstration of the steps involved in creating a stained-glass window, and then -  he’ll also explain how he makes wood frames for his arched windows.  He’s also going to discuss some ideas for combining wood and stained glass for some unique projects.

This meeting will be held at Woodcraft of Las Vegas at 5220 W. Charleston Blvd.  As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.

Everything you've ever wanted to know about starting a small woodworking business - from a guy who's done it!

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions meet on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas, demos and information about local suppliers and much, much more.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 16, at 7:00 and we’ll be discussing a topic that many of our members have asked about - what’s it like to start your own woodworking business?

If you love woodworking, and are thinking about starting a small business… here’s your chance to get some first hand advice from local woodworker and businessman John Forte of Forte Wood Creations.

Originally from Massachusetts, John has been a Las Vegas resident for over 42 years. He’s had multiple business ventures, including hair salons, home building, online sales, board game inventing and - you guessed it - woodworking!

John started his woodworking/crafting company a few years ago, and will be sharing his experiences with running a small woodworking business.  Hopefully, his first hand knowledge will help others figure out their path in wood. He’ll be discussing the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of being a small business owner. Interested in putting your work in stores or galleries? He's done it! Direct sales? Yup! And hopefully, his discussion will give everyone some things to think about when considering turning their wood passion into a company.

This meeting will be held at Woodcraft of Las Vegas at 5220 W. Charleston Blvd.  As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.
