Field Trip! Join us for a fascinating glimpse into a master woodturner's world!

Two words - FIELD TRIP!!

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, meets on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more.

We have something special planned this month.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 16 at 7:00 and we’re thrilled to be heading to master wood turner Bryan Thompson’s shop, where he’ll give us a glimpse into his life of turning wood.

Bryan has been doing woodworking for over 50 years, and yes, as he says - he is very old.  He was fortunate enough to have a school shop teacher as a mentor who encouraged him along his woodworking journey.  He has become pretty good at turning wood, specializing in segmented work.

He has invited us out to his woodworking shop to show us his process for creating segmented bowls.  He’ll give us an overview of his workshop and then explain how he creates his segmented bowls with upwards of 3000 to 4000 individual pieces of wood.

His address is: 5980 Kevin Way, Las Vegas, NV 89149. Google Maps will lead you there!

We won't have a Show-and-Tell at this meeting, but we will still be collecting SCWW dues.  Remember - paying dues are always voluntary, but help us with the costs associated with running our group. Just our Meetup costs alone are nearly $400 a year, so your dues go a long way in helping us keep this group active. Dues are $20 for a year, and to be honest - we only collect them when our balance gets low!

Finally - as always - the public is welcome to attend the meeting, And this will be a special one that you won’t want to miss.  Please feel free to bring a guest along, but be respectful of Bryan’s neighbors. His home is on a cul-de-sac, so as long as you don’t block any of his neighbors’ driveways, you can park in anywhere near there.

If you have questions, call (702) 672-8981.

You're invited to our March meeting - on leather work.

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions. We meet on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 19 at 7:00 and will feature leather worker Napoleon Buenrostro, who will be demonstrating leather work, and how it can be helpful to woodworkers. Need some chisel protectors? A custom shop apron? Want to cover the face of a mallet? How about a leather strop for honing your blades? Leather work is more valuable to woodworkers that you can imagine!

Napoleon started as an aspiring woodworker hobbyist during the pandemic at Wood It Is! After having taken several woodworking classes, he faced several adversities in his woodworking endeavors. It was then that he ventured out into the realm of leather crafting with his first exposure being leather crafting videos on YouTube.

His initial training consisted of free lessons at the local leather store and asking more experienced leather crafters for advice. Since then Napoleon has learned a solid technique which allows for the creation of custom made leather goods and accessories for all types of applications - from fine leather goods to useful workshop add-ons. He will bring some of his work and will be available to answer any questions regarding leather work.

We’ll be collecting SCWW dues this month - remember - these are always voluntary, but help us with the costs associated with running our group. Just our Meetup costs alone are nearly $400 a year, so your dues go a long way in helping us keep this group active.

Have you built something interesting lately, that you want to share with the group? Bring something for Show-and-Tell and feel free to brag a bit!

This meeting will be held at Woodcraft of Las Vegas at 5220 W. Charleston Blvd.  As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.

Want to see a masterpiece up close? Come to our next meeting!

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, will now be meeting on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 19, at 7:00, and we’re thrilled to have Dennis Patchett presenting a pie crust table that he recently built.

What’s a pie crust table, you ask? As Wikipedia says - It’s an 18th-century, Rococo-style tilt-top tea table characterized by a round, solid wood top with an intricately carved, raised, and scalloped edge resembling a crimped pie crust. Commonly featuring a tripod base with claw-and-ball feet, these elegant tables often include a "birdcage" mechanism allowing the top to rotate and tilt for storage.

If you know anything about Dennis and his work, you know that he is an expert carver. Add to that the 60 years that he's been building furniture, and you can only imagine how exquisite this table is. There are so many details to notice in this piece, that you will want to inspect it up close!

Dennis is one of our oldest member members (not his age!) He’s been with us since the start. Speaking of that, this month marks our 17th year of existence. So happy anniversary to us! You won't want to miss this meeting, Dennis has been building custom furniture for decades, and his pieces might legitimately be called the best handmade pieces in this town.

This meeting will be held at Woodcraft of Las Vegas at 5220 W. Charleston Blvd.  As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.

Come to our wood sale on Sunday, January 18 - at Reclaimed Secrets

 Field Trip!

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions. We meet on the third Thursday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas, demos and information about local suppliers and much, much more. But this month’s meeting won’t be held on our normal date….

We only have two words about this month’s meeting - Field Trip!

WE WILL NOT BE MEETING THIS THURSDAY - our meeting has been changed to the following Sunday morning.

We’ll be heading to Reclaimed Secrets for a fantastic wood sale next Sunday, January 18, at 10:00 am. The location for this meeting/sale will be at 2912 S Highland Dr. (Suite F) Las Vegas, NV 89109.

Reclaimed Secrets is full service design and manufacturing shop. Andrew Moore and his crew can either sell you an live edge slab, or design and build something amazing for you. Even better? Andrew was in the top running for Martha Stewart's handmade in America 3 years in a row! We’ve visited Andrew Moore’s shop several times in the last ten years, and we have breaking news - Andrew is relocating his shop to Texas.

Best known for his live edge creations, Andrew has built hundreds of tables in the Las Vegas area. His work can be found in residential homes, commercial restaurants and bars, fire stations, city offices, Nellis AFB and more. Chances are - if you see a live edge table in town, he probably made it!

Andrew is a long time supporter of our woodworking group - having donated live edge slabs many times over the years. We first visited his shop in 2016, and he’s been a friend, teacher and consultant to many of us ever since.

But all things come to an end - so Andrew is relocating and hoping to sell off his current stock of slabs, cookies, off cuts, and possibly some tools. Moving these slabs isn’t going to be easy, so NO REASONABLE OFFER will be refused.  If you’ve been thinking of making a table, bench, countertop or whatever - now is your chance to buy some slabs at a fantastic price.

If you’re a wood turner - Andrew has some great thicker slabs available - so this sale isn’t just for furniture makers!

This meeting/sale will be at Reclaimed Secrets, 2912 S Highland Dr. -  Suite F, Las Vegas, NV 89109. We’ll be meeting there next Sunday - January 18, starting at 10:00 am.  So bring your trucks, ratchet straps and checkbook - and stock up your wood supply.

As always, the public is welcome to attend this sale, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. If you have questions or need directions, call (702) 672-8981.
