Happy New Year to all of us!
Hope your holidays were awesome, and that you’re back in the shop, making some amazing pieces. It’s time for another year of great woodworking presentations - so here goes…
Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, meet on the third Wednesday of each month to share everything from techniques and project ideas to information about local suppliers and much more. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17 at 7:00, and we’re in for a treat - longtime luthier George Millward will be sharing his guitar building talent with a discussion of his 47 year career of guitar building.
George started off as an apprentice cabinetmaker in Chicago, and worked with some of the best. When he the opportunity, he also apprenticed with a luthier, learning the long lost skill of building guitars entirely by hand. Most guitars you’ll see are mass produced, but George’s guitars, which have sold on http://reverb.com , are built with classical methods of construction and joinery, built completely (for the most part) with hand tools.
He’ll bring a completed top and neck, and discuss some of the finer points of hand tool work that goes into making these instruments. George hopes to connect with other woodworkers interested in learning to build guitars, with the possibility of teaching a class in it. If you’ve wondered what’s involved, been interested in building your own, or just have some questions about instrument building - this is the meeting for you!
As usual, this meeting will be held at Studio: Wood It Is!, 2267 West Gowan, unit 106 in North Las Vegas. Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. But remember that there are a limited number of chairs in the woodshop. Attendees might want to bring a folding chair if they wish to sit during the meeting. If you have questions or need directions, call the studio at 702-631-1870.
